The need to remain competitive in a fickle, ever growing market, forces the automotive companies to internally quantify the costs and benefits coming from new production criteria and/or technologies and to quickly design their practical introduction. This leads to a continuous evaluation, rationalization, re-arrangement and re-engineering of the design and production processes: process modeling and analysis techniques can provide the necessary support to these activities. In this area, Ferrari promoted a pilot project focused on the design of a meaningful automobile component. First, a functional model of the component design process, AS it IS currently performed, has been produced by means of iterated interviews of the Ferrari design experts. The model, composed of a structured set of IDEF0 diagrams and associated glossary and textual annotations, immediately revealed its effectiveness on documenting the process, thus providing a consistent base for the following analysis and improvement phases. A set of possible enhancements has been individuated and, step by step, designed so that the model of a new design process, as it has TO BE performed in the future, has been produced. Finally, in order to put this new process into practice, a comparative analysis of the two models has been conducted and a set of organizational issues have been highlighted and submitted to the Ferrari management. L’evoluzione delle tecnologie di rapid prototyping, finalmente disponibili ai progettisti, sta avendo un pesante impatto sul processo di progettazione; per trarre i massimi vantaggi da queste tecnologie, in termini di tempi di progettazione e di qualità del prodotto, l’intero processo di progettazione va ristrutturato e vanno rivisti gli strumenti di ausilio al progettista ed in particolare i sistemi CAD. Questa ristrutturazione rende improvvisamente obsoleti quei sistemi che non sono in grado di gestire in modo automatico o semiautomatico le operazioni di modifica dimensionale e morfologica del modello richieste dal progettista. Anche i sistemi in grado di offrire queste funzionalità, i sistemi di tipo parametrico-variazionali, subiscono l’impatto delle tecnologie di rapid prototyping e mostrano i loro limiti attuali. Questo articolo descrive un’esperienza di utilizzo degli strumenti di rapid prototyping affiancati da strumenti CAD parametrico-variazionali nella progettazione della testata di un motore motociclistico da competizione. In questo ambito, pur rilevando i limiti attuali dei sistemi CAD, si evidenzia la validità del loro abbinamento con le tecnologie di rapid prototyping e si individuano nuove direzioni di evoluzione delle tecnologie parametrico-variazionali. I wrote this book while working and teaching at the mechanical Engineering Faculty of the University of Parma, Italy. It book was adopted as textbook by several Engineering Departments across Italy.

We present a CAD system, named GIPS (Graphic Interactive Parametric System), able to automatically generate CAD applications and based on an approach which integrates computer aided design phase with an automatic generator of executable code. The designer is aided by GIPS to identify the problem solution and to describe it by means of “engineering drawing language”.
